The investment firm allocates funds to support developers implementing post-quantum cryptography standards for Bitcoin upgrades.
Galaxy has committed $5M to developers working on quantum-resistant upgrades for Bitcoin. The initiative targets adoption of post-quantum cryptography standards published by NIST in August 2024, which include hash-based signature algorithms for key establishment and digital signatures.
Industry experts, including Blockstream CEO Adam Back, estimate Bitcoin faces no meaningful quantum threat for at least 20 to 40 years. Blockstream Research proposed a hash-based signature scheme in December 2025 as a potential replacement for Bitcoin’s current ECDSA and Schnorr signatures.
Bernstein analysts previously stated Bitcoin has a three-to-five-year window to prepare for post-quantum security upgrades, though they noted the market has largely priced in quantum risk.
