Limited Fed guidance and mixed inflation signals leave markets pricing a one-third chance of a July hike and two cuts by year-end.

The US Dollar (USD) remains supported by policy uncertainty despite softer June Consumer Price Index (CPI) data easing immediate inflation fears. Markets now price a roughly one-third chance of a Federal Reserve rate hike this week and nearly two cuts by year-end, reflecting mixed signals from recent economic prints.

Wednesday’s Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) decision and Thursday’s Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) Price Index release are key catalysts. The Fed’s limited forward guidance under new leadership has left the meeting unusually open to interpretation, with front-end rates, FX, and risk assets poised for volatility. June’s below-expectation CPI print may allow the Fed to hold rates, but geopolitical risks could reignite inflation later in the year.

Thursday’s PCE data will act as a secondary driver, reinforcing or challenging the disinflation narrative. Even minor shifts in the Fed’s tone could trigger significant moves in short-term rates and the USD.
