The Federal Reserve’s July interest rate decision remains uncertain as rising oil prices and divergent views among policymakers create a tight call. Traders now see a 64.2% chance of a rate hold, a slight decline from earlier in the week, reflecting heightened uncertainty over inflation trends and economic data.

At the June meeting, half of the Federal Open Market Committee members anticipated needing a rate hike this year, while the other half favored steady rates. Minutes revealed most officials would hold or cut rates if inflation eases, but nearly all would hike if inflation persists due to labor market strength, AI demand, or geopolitical tensions.

Several Fed officials, including Governors Lisa Cook, Chris Waller, and Philip Jefferson, have signaled comfort with a July hold but left the door open for future hikes if inflation fails to cool. The decision hinges on how the committee interprets recent economic signals, with Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s stance still unclear.
