A former FBI supervisory agent pleaded guilty to stealing approximately $1 million in cryptocurrency from wallets linked to an adversarial country. Patrick Steven Yaroch used internal systems to obtain credentials and executed 10 unauthorized transfers between late 2024 and early 2025, depositing some funds into yield platform Suilend.
Yaroch self-reported the incident, leading to his termination and arrest. Authorities recovered devices, seed phrases, and a Trezor wallet from his Virginia residence, transferring roughly $925,000 to government-controlled wallets. The case highlights vulnerabilities in digital asset security and law enforcement oversight.
Court filings revealed Yaroch sought investment advice from ChatGPT in May, asking how to maximize returns on $1 million. The AI suggested agricultural investments in regions like Portugal’s Dão.
