A Berlin-based startup debuts autonomous ride-hailing at a fixed price, challenging traditional taxi and ride-sharing models.

Europe’s first commercial robotaxi service began operations in Berlin, offering rides at a flat rate of EUR 1.99. The service, launched by local startup Vay, uses remote-controlled electric vehicles without in-car drivers, aiming to disrupt urban mobility markets.

The pricing undercuts conventional taxis and ride-hailing platforms like Uber, which typically charge dynamic fares. Vay’s model relies on teleoperators monitoring vehicles from a control center, reducing labor costs. The company plans to expand to other European cities pending regulatory approval.

Shares of European ride-hailing and automotive firms showed muted reaction in early trading, as investors assess the long-term scalability of autonomous services.
