A proposed Ethereum Improvement Proposal, EIP-8363, seeks to gradually eliminate staking rewards, arguing that additional ETH locked up yields diminishing security benefits. The proposal suggests Ethereum should halt subsidies once network security is sufficient, but it has faced significant pushback from community members.

ETH staked has risen 15% since the start of 2026, driven largely by institutional players like Bitmine and BlackRock. Critics, including Ethereum commentator Leo Lanza, contend that issuance does not act as a “stealth tax” on non-stakers and that yields near 2% will naturally cap further growth. Some predict a plateau in staking participation by year-end.

Opponents also argue that market dynamics, rather than policy changes, will regulate staking levels. The debate centers on whether Ethereum’s current issuance policy remains necessary or if adjustments could disrupt the ecosystem’s balance.
