Hsiao-Wei Wang’s departure marks the latest in a series of high-profile exits amid governance and talent retention concerns for Ethereum.
The Ethereum Foundation has seen another senior leader exit, with co-executive director Hsiao-Wei Wang stepping down immediately after a sabbatical. Wang, who described Ethereum as “bigger than any role,” did not disclose her next steps in an X post announcing the move.
This departure follows at least 19 layoffs and exits this year, including Tomasz Stanczak’s earlier resignation from a leadership role. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin acknowledged Wang’s challenging position, while the foundation faces scrutiny over governance, decentralization, and long-term strategy amid competition and market pressures.
The exodus raises questions about talent retention and the foundation’s role in Ethereum’s development, particularly as Ether’s performance remains under pressure. Buterin has previously defended the foundation’s approach, countering calls for a more active promotional role.
