The U.K. government nears a deal with EDF and Centrica to extend Sizewell B’s operational life, securing energy supply amid rising demand.

Electricite de France and Centrica are finalizing a draft agreement with the U.K. government to extend the Sizewell B nuclear power station’s lifespan by 20 years. The deal aims to bolster the country’s energy security and reduce reliance on fossil fuels amid increasing electricity demand.

Sizewell B, operational since 1995, currently provides around 3% of the U.K.’s electricity. The extension would delay its decommissioning, originally planned for the 2030s, and aligns with the government’s push for nuclear energy as part of its net-zero strategy.

No immediate market reaction was reported, but the agreement could stabilize long-term energy costs and support nuclear sector investments in the U.K.
