Hughes Satellite Systems seeks bankruptcy protection after failing to repay $1.5 billion in bonds amid rising competition from LEO providers.
Hughes Satellite Systems, a unit of EchoStar Corp., filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection after missing a $1.5 billion bond repayment due August 1. The company cited intense competition from low-earth-orbit satellite providers like SpaceX and Amazon Leo as a key factor in its financial struggles.
As of March, Hughes held $102 million in cash, far below the debt obligation. Its broadband subscriber base fell 21.7% in the year ending June 30, 2025, with no expected recovery due to structural shifts in the satellite broadband market. The company serves 641,000 residential subscribers and government clients.
Hughes plans to reorganize around enterprise, government, and defense customers during the bankruptcy process. Chief Restructuring Officer Robert del Genio stated that LEO competition is a long-term challenge, not a temporary setback.
