The European Central Bank will test digital euro functionality with selected payment providers over 12 months starting mid-2027.
The European Central Bank has chosen 36 payment service providers to participate in its digital euro pilot, set to begin in the second half of 2027. The 12-month pilot aims to test technical functionality, operational processes, and user experience as part of preparatory work for a potential digital euro issuance.
Over 50 applications were received following a call for interest in March 2026, reflecting strong market engagement. Selected participants include banks and non-bank providers, covering a range of business models, sizes, and geographies to ensure diverse testing.
The pilot will be conducted at the ECB and several national central banks within the Eurosystem. Its findings will help refine the digital euro’s design and implementation before any final decision on issuance.
