UK spirits group Distil appoints industry veteran with 25 years of experience to lead growth amid board restructuring.

UK-based spirits company Distil has appointed David Smith, a former Diageo executive, as its new CEO effective 17 August. The move follows a broader board overhaul, including the retirement of executive chairman Don Goulding, who will step down on 14 August. Philip Naughton will assume the role of non-executive chairman on the same date.

Smith brings over 25 years of experience in the drinks sector, including leadership roles at English whisky maker Fielden and West Indies Rum Distillery. His tenure at Diageo involved launching ready-to-drink (RTD) products and expanding brands in export markets. Distil, owner of Blackwoods gin and vodka, highlighted Smith’s track record in building premium brands as key to its growth strategy.

The company stated the leadership changes aim to separate the executive chairman and CEO roles to strengthen governance. Smith expressed confidence in Distil’s innovation and product quality, citing affordability trends as a growth opportunity. His board appointment remains subject to due diligence.
