July became the second-highest month for crypto thefts in 2026 after a Coldcard exploit drove losses to $247.4 million.

Cryptocurrency thefts reached $247.4 million in July, the second-highest monthly total in 2026, driven by a Coldcard hardware wallet exploit. The attack accounted for over $100 million in losses, with potential total damages nearing $130 million across 7,300 wallets in multiple waves.

The July figure more than tripled June’s $75 million and May’s $60 million losses, trailing only April’s $644 million. Other notable exploits included $24 million from an Arbitrum-based exchange and $9 million from a DeFi protocol.

Analysts noted the incident highlighted risks in cold storage solutions, traditionally considered secure. Market reactions remained muted as investors focused on broader macroeconomic trends.
