Law enforcement highlights $3.4 billion in crypto thefts this year as fraudsters target fans with fake ticket schemes.
Law enforcement agencies are warning soccer fans about a rise in cryptocurrency scams tied to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Fraudsters are using fake ticket sales, hospitality packages, and merchandise offers to steal money and personal data, with crypto payments flagged as a key red flag due to their irreversibility.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department highlighted that scammers create counterfeit FIFA websites and social media ads mimicking legitimate platforms. Cybercriminals are leveraging artificial intelligence to enhance their schemes, increasing the sophistication of fraud attempts. Crypto thefts in 2025 have already reached $3.4 billion, according to Chainalysis.
Authorities urge fans to avoid payments via cryptocurrency, wire transfers, or gift cards, which are difficult to recover. The alert coincides with preparations for the tournament, set to host millions across the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.
