China’s retail sales rose 0.6% year-over-year in July, falling short of the 1.5% growth forecast and slowing from June’s 1.0% increase. The data, released by the National Bureau of Statistics, underscores persistent weakness in consumer spending as economic recovery loses momentum.

Industrial production also disappointed, climbing 4.5% YoY against a 5.0% estimate and June’s 5.3% gain. Fixed asset investment contracted 6.7% year-to-date, worse than the expected 6.2% decline, extending June’s 5.7% drop. The figures highlight challenges in China’s post-pandemic rebound amid subdued domestic and external demand.

The Australian Dollar, sensitive to Chinese economic health due to trade ties, may face downward pressure as investors reassess growth prospects in the region.
