China’s liquefied natural gas imports have climbed to their highest level since the onset of the Iran war, driven by state-backed and private buyers preparing for peak summer consumption. Traders report monthly cargo volumes of 7 to 10 shipments to replace lost Qatari supply, which has been disrupted by geopolitical tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.

The increase follows a sharp decline in Qatari LNG deliveries, with some pre-war cargoes still stranded. Analysts note that China, the world’s largest LNG importer, is prioritizing supply security amid rising temperatures and industrial demand.

Markets have yet to react significantly, but the shift underscores China’s efforts to diversify energy sources and mitigate supply risks ahead of the summer season.
