Weaker-than-expected industrial output, retail sales, and investment in July signal fragile H2 GDP growth, pressuring Beijing for policy support.

China’s July economic activity data fell short of expectations across industrial output, retail sales, and fixed-asset investment, reflecting weather disruptions and a deepening property downturn. The weak print underscores a fragile start to the second half, with GDP growth now seen trailing the official target.

Industrial production rose 5.1% year-on-year, below consensus, while retail sales grew 2.7%, and fixed-asset investment slowed. Exports remained a rare bright spot, but consumer caution and sub-target growth are intensifying calls for fiscal and monetary stimulus.

The data miss raises pressure on policymakers to deliver more substantive support in the coming months to sustain a H2 recovery and meet the full-year GDP goal.
