CFTC Chair Selig asserts the agency will regulate crypto markets under existing authority if Congress delays legislation.
CFTC Chairman Michael Selig stated the agency will implement market structure rules for the crypto industry regardless of whether the Clarity Act passes. The move follows stalled legislative efforts in the Senate over ethics provisions tied to the bill, which aims to grant the CFTC primary oversight of digital assets.
The CFTC is evaluating potential regulations under current laws and has initiated steps to finalize rules for prediction market contracts. A public consultation on AI compute futures has also been launched, with coordination underway between the CFTC and Commerce Department to establish standards for these products.
Selig emphasized the agency’s authority to act independently, signaling a push to regulate crypto markets even amid congressional gridlock.
