The private equity firm finalizes a deal for the Cleveland-based RIA, maintaining MAI’s leadership and operational independence.

Carlyle has acquired a majority stake in MAI Capital Management, a registered investment advisor overseeing $77.3 billion in client assets. The transaction closed on June 4, 2026, solidifying a relationship that began in 2021 when Carlyle invested in Galway Holdings, MAI’s prior owner.

MAI employees retain a significant minority equity position, and the firm’s leadership, culture, and operational independence will remain unchanged. The deal follows MAI’s growth trajectory, including prior acquisitions and a nationwide presence with over 40 offices and 700 employees.

Carlyle plans to support MAI’s expansion through technology investments and strategic acquisitions. Galway Holdings and funds managed by Harvest Partners and Oak Hill Capital have exited their positions as part of the transaction.
