July employment gains and lower unemployment signal economic strength but excess labor supply keeps Bank of Canada cautious on rates.

Canada added 75.1K jobs in July, exceeding expectations and pushing the unemployment rate lower. The gain reflects broad-based hiring, with private-sector employment rising 58K and hours worked up 0.6%, signaling solid economic momentum at the start of Q3.

The three-month hiring pace hit 146K, a three-year high, driven by recoveries across most sectors. While wage pressures have eased, the labor market remains in excess supply, with unemployment hovering near 6.5%-7.0% for months.

Economists argue the data supports a cautious approach from the Bank of Canada, as temporary employment trends and persistent slack reduce urgency for further rate hikes.
