Ontario and Alberta have unveiled plans for a 3,300km crude oil pipeline, the Northern Shield Energy Corridor, connecting Hardisty, Alberta, to Sarnia, Ontario. The project is expected to transport 500,000 barrels per day (bopd), with potential expansion to 800,000 bopd, enhancing domestic supply and export capacity.

The pipeline is designed to increase crude flow into Sarnia’s refining hub and add redundancy to existing infrastructure. Sarnia was selected for its refining capacity and access to shipping routes. Officials also explore extensions to ports for tidewater exports, aiming to strengthen Canada’s energy security and market reach.

Proponents argue the project will support jobs and economic resilience, though no immediate market reaction was detailed in the proposal.
