The government is assessing technical feasibility of integrating the stablecoin into its national payments alongside the boliviano and USD.
Bolivia’s Economy Minister José Gabriel Espinoza confirmed the government is evaluating the technical integration of USDT into the national payment system. If approved, the stablecoin would circulate formally alongside the boliviano and U.S. dollar, addressing liquidity constraints amid a prolonged foreign currency shortage.
The proposal follows growing USDT adoption in the country, with Banco Unión and Banco FIE already offering related services. Bolivia has faced dollar scarcity for years, prompting informal crypto use as an alternative. Officials have not set a timeline for a decision.
No immediate market reaction was reported, but the move could signal broader stablecoin adoption in emerging markets with currency instability.
