Blue Cross Blue Shield has commenced distributing payments from a $2.67 billion class action antitrust settlement. The payouts follow a 2020 settlement resolving allegations that affiliated companies divided markets and stifled competition, driving up premiums and limiting consumer choices.
Nearly 6 million claims were submitted by the 2021 deadline. After legal fees and administrative costs, the remaining pool is approximately $1.9 billion. Individual payouts are expected to average around $333, with claimants receiving $5 or less excluded from disbursement.
Eligibility required coverage under a Blue Cross or Blue Shield plan between 2008 and 2020 and a filed claim before the deadline. Notices are being sent via email and postcard as claims are processed.
