Bitcoin decentralized finance network Botanix will shut down after four years, attributing the decision to weak demand for native Bitcoin DeFi applications. The company said most users treat Bitcoin as a reserve asset rather than an active onchain tool, with wrapped BTC on Ethereum dominating existing DeFi activity.

Botanix noted that trading volume and attention have concentrated on major exchanges and traditional financial intermediaries, leaving infrastructure-heavy networks like itself unable to generate sufficient fee revenue. The shutdown follows warnings that users must withdraw assets by July 9 or risk losing access, underscoring risks for retail participants in experimental DeFi platforms.

The closure occurs as competing projects, including Stacks, Rootstock, and Citrea, pursue alternative approaches to Bitcoin programmability. Citrea’s co-founder argued Botanix’s struggles reflect a lack of distinct value for long-term Bitcoin holders rather than a broader failure of Bitcoin DeFi.
