Greg Abel takes helm with 59% of investable assets in cash, resuming buybacks after a 21-month pause.
Berkshire Hathaway’s cash reserves reached $397 billion, representing 59% of its investable assets, as Greg Abel assumed the CEO role on January 1, 2026. The conglomerate resumed share buybacks in Q2, repurchasing up to $11 billion of BRK-B stock after a 21-month moratorium.
Under Warren Buffett, Berkshire’s portfolio grew to $1 trillion, with 70% of its $381 billion equity holdings concentrated in just six stocks. Abel, previously vice chair, has signaled confidence by purchasing $15 million in shares, matching his annual after-tax salary.
Buffett, 95, remains board chair but has delegated all decision-making to Abel, who now oversees a historically large cash position amid market uncertainty.
