July’s jobless rate rise to 4.5% missed forecasts, signaling potential RBA policy pause amid gradual labor market softening.

Australia’s unemployment rate climbed to 4.5% in July, exceeding the 4.4% forecast and marking its highest level since late 2021. The increase was driven entirely by a decline in part-time roles, while full-time employment rose, suggesting a gradual rather than sharp labor market slowdown.

Employment fell by 15.8k in July, defying expectations for a modest gain, though June’s data was revised sharply higher to 80.2k from 76.3k. The three-month average employment growth remained firm at 34k, with the jobless rate stable at 4.4% on a three-month basis.

The Australian dollar may face pressure due to the headline miss, though the upward revision to June’s data could temper the reaction. The figures may reinforce expectations that the RBA will hold rates steady to assess policy impacts.
