The Australian Dollar strengthens against the Yen amid diverging central bank policies, though intervention risks persist.

The AUD/JPY pair climbed to near 113.55 in early European trading on Monday, driven by the widening interest rate gap between the Reserve Bank of Australia and the Bank of Japan. The RBA held its cash rate at 4.35% in June after three consecutive 25 basis points hikes, adopting a cautious stance to assess inflation and economic cooling.

Market expectations suggest a 16% chance of an August rate hike, with odds rising to 50-60% for a December move. Meanwhile, the BoJ is expected to keep rates steady at its July meeting but may tighten further later this year, following June’s hike to a three-decade high.

Traders remain wary of potential Japanese intervention, with Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama warning of decisive action if needed. The cross’s upside may be limited by these risks despite the current rate differential.
