Alphabet increased its 2026 capital expenditure guidance to $195 billion-$205 billion, up from $180 billion-$190 billion, as it accelerates AI infrastructure investments. The company reported its first negative free cash flow quarter in history at ($5.9 billion) for Q2, sparking investor concerns despite strong revenue growth.

Prior to this quarter, Alphabet had consistently generated positive free cash flow, with Q1 2024 at $10.1 billion. The shift to negative cash flow reflects the scale of spending required to compete in AI, though management maintains high return on capital expectations due to its dominant search and YouTube franchises.

Shares fell following the July 22 report, as markets weighed near-term profitability against long-term AI growth potential. The company’s historical ability to monetize investments remains a key factor for investor confidence.
