Alphabet (GOOGL, GOOG) was added to the Dow Jones Industrial Average on June 29, replacing Verizon Communications. The stock has surged over 300% since January 2023, driven by its integration of artificial intelligence into advertising and cloud products.
The Dow Jones, a price-weighted index, includes only 30 blue-chip stocks, all of which are also part of the S&P 500. Alphabet is the 16th company added to the index in the past 15 years. Historically, stocks added to the Dow Jones have averaged a 7% gain in the year following inclusion.
