Bitcoin’s dominance rises to 61% as altcoins fail to match its rally, defying typical market patterns during surges.
Bitcoin surged roughly 24% over the past week to near $79,000, marking its strongest performance since 2023. The rally has outpaced the broader crypto market, with altcoins struggling to keep pace despite their typically higher volatility.
Bitcoin’s dominance, or its share of the total crypto market, climbed to around 61%, reversing the usual trend where altcoins outperform during rallies. The CoinMarketCap Altcoin Season Index, which tracks the top 100 coins’ performance against Bitcoin over 90 days, sits at 46—far below the 75 threshold signaling an altcoin season.
Ethereum led altcoins with a 30% weekly gain to above $2,500, but the broader altcoin market, measured by the Total3 index, cooled to $753 billion after an early rally. Total2, which includes all altcoins, briefly topped $1 trillion before retreating to $1.05 trillion.
