A Bitcoin security researcher has turned to Chinese open-source AI models after OpenAI restricted access to its tools for analyzing Bitcoin codebases. Rob Hamilton, CEO of AnchorWatch, said his team was blocked from using OpenAI’s Trust & Cyber capabilities just one day after integration, forcing a shift to alternatives despite national security concerns.
Bitcoin Red Team, a volunteer group, has identified 1,288 critical and high-level vulnerabilities in the Bitcoin ecosystem. The move follows a surge in attacks, including the Coldcard hardware wallet hack, which has seen over $100 million in Bitcoin stolen. Industry executives have noted that access to advanced AI tools for security remains limited to a select few.
The restriction highlights growing tensions over AI tool availability for cybersecurity defenders. Hamilton’s team accelerated its efforts after recent high-profile breaches, but the lack of access to leading AI models may hinder further research.
