Saudi Arabia and the UAE have formally requested Japanese financial and strategic support for pipeline projects designed to bypass the Strait of Hormuz. The move follows disruptions linked to the Iran conflict, which have heightened concerns over supply security for major crude exporters and buyers alike.

Current pipeline expansion efforts in the UAE and proposed projects in Saudi Arabia could gain momentum with Japanese backing. However, Japan’s refining infrastructure limits its ability to quickly shift away from Middle Eastern crude, suggesting any transition will be gradual rather than immediate.

The request underscores the region’s push to diversify export routes, though near-term changes in crude sourcing patterns remain constrained by logistical and technical factors.
