OpenAI commits $500 million to a biotech initiative while locking in memory supply and designing its own AI-optimized silicon.
OpenAI unveiled a custom AI chip, Jalapeño, developed with Broadcom to accelerate large language model workloads. The chip is described as the first designed with AI agents in the loop, enabling faster instruction set development for products like ChatGPT and future agentic systems.
The company also secured 40% of the world’s DRAM wafer supply through 2029, positioning Micron as a key beneficiary. This move aligns with OpenAI’s shift toward vertical integration, reducing reliance on third-party infrastructure.
Separately, OpenAI, Anthropic, Stripe, and Bill Gates jointly pledged $500 million to Intercept, a new organization targeting the elimination of respiratory viruses.
