EU antitrust regulators have proposed designating Microsoft’s Azure and Amazon Web Services as “gatekeepers” under the Digital Markets Act. This move would enforce obligations to limit self-preferencing and ensure interoperability and data portability for the cloud units.

The designation follows growing scrutiny of Big Tech’s market power, with prior discussions focusing on similar regulations for other major platforms. The rules aim to foster fair competition and reduce barriers for smaller competitors in the cloud computing sector.

Microsoft and Amazon have not yet responded to the proposal, which could reshape operational frameworks for their cloud divisions if finalized.
