Solar power has become a significant contributor to the US energy supply, surpassing coal for the first time.

The shift towards renewable energy has been ongoing, with natural gas overtaking coal as the primary fuel for the electric utility sector about a decade ago.

Coal’s use has continued to decline, falling from 19.7% of supply five years ago to 12.2% in May, while solar power has increased from 5.4% to 12.8% over the same period.
