EuroCommerce urges EU ministers to grant a grace period as unclear PPWR technical details risk disrupting supply chains ahead of August deadline.

EU retailers and wholesalers are demanding a 12-month grace period for the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), set to take effect on 12 August. Trade association EuroCommerce warns that critical technical details, including PFAS thresholds and recyclability requirements, remain unresolved just weeks before implementation.

The PPWR, in force since February 2023, introduces phased compliance deadlines through 2030. However, businesses argue they lack clarity on enforcement, testing protocols, and adaptation timelines. EuroCommerce emphasized the need for guidance over punitive measures during the transition.

The call coincides with an EU Environment Ministers meeting in Luxembourg, where industry concerns over supply chain disruptions and unforeseen challenges are expected to be raised.
