IBM announces a breakthrough chip packing 100 billion transistors, aiming to boost AI and cloud computing capabilities within five years.

IBM shares climbed 2% in pre-market trading after the company revealed the world’s first sub-1 nanometer chip technology. The new chip, described as the size of a fingernail, contains nearly 100 billion transistors—double the density of IBM’s 2 nm chip introduced in 2021.

The advancement is expected to enhance performance for generative AI, cloud infrastructure, and next-gen electronics. IBM projects production could begin in as little as five years, positioning the company as a key player in semiconductor innovation.

The move follows a recent upgrade by JPMorgan analysts, who cited IBM’s improving software business and hardware initiatives, including quantum computing. Earlier this week, IBM also partnered with OpenAI to integrate AI into security operations.
