Alphabet is partnering with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing to develop custom AI chips, mirroring Apple’s strategy of controlling its hardware and software stack. The move targets Nvidia’s dominance in AI silicon, where data center revenue hit $75.2B in Q1, up 92% year-over-year.

Apple’s vertical integration delivered 49.3% gross margins, a model Alphabet seeks to emulate to lower AI infrastructure costs and strengthen ecosystem control. The shift reflects Big Tech’s race to secure semiconductor supply amid rising AI training and operational expenses.

The strategy could reduce reliance on Nvidia’s commodity GPUs, which currently dominate the AI hardware market. Analysts view hardware control as critical to long-term profitability in the trillion-dollar AI sector.
