A California jury rejects Musk’s claims that OpenAI abandoned its nonprofit mission after he contributed $38 million in 2015.

A U.S. jury ruled Elon Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI was filed too late, dismissing his allegations that the AI firm misused his $38 million contribution. The unanimous verdict followed less than two hours of deliberation in Oakland federal court.

Musk had accused OpenAI, co-founded by CEO Sam Altman in 2015, of shifting from a nonprofit to a for-profit model backed by Microsoft and other investors. The case centered on whether OpenAI’s mission to benefit humanity was compromised.

OpenAI’s legal team argued the statute of limitations barred Musk’s claims. The judge indicated the jury’s factual finding on timing would make an appeal difficult.
