A StarkWare researcher has completed the first quantum-safe Bitcoin transaction on the mainnet, using a scheme designed to protect against Shor-algorithm attacks. The method shifts security from elliptic-curve cryptography to hash-based assumptions without requiring a soft fork or changes to Bitcoin’s consensus rules.

The experimental approach, called Quantum-Safe Bitcoin (QSB), remains unproven at scale and demands $75–$150 in off-chain GPU computation per transaction. No prior quantum-resistant Bitcoin transactions have been confirmed on the mainnet, marking this as a preliminary test of post-quantum security.

No immediate market reaction was reported following the announcement.
