Tokyo aims to launch a blockchain-based infrastructure by 2027 to enable round-the-clock real-time settlement of securities.
Japan’s government, the Bank of Japan, and financial institutions will develop a blockchain-based system for 24/7 real-time settlement of government bonds and stocks. The initiative targets a development plan by early 2027, outlining collaboration between regulators and market participants.
A study group including the Financial Services Agency, Ministry of Finance, and BOJ will form this summer. Previous blockchain experiments lacked a clear timeline, making this the first project with a defined implementation schedule.
The move seeks to modernize Japan’s financial infrastructure, potentially reducing settlement times and operational costs for market participants.
