GE Vernova confirms heavy-duty gas turbine orders face a seven-year wait, risking delays for AI-driven data center power expansion.

GE Vernova disclosed on its July 22 earnings call that new heavy-duty gas turbine orders will not be fulfilled until 2031. The backlog underscores a critical bottleneck for AI data centers, which rely on these turbines for power generation amid surging demand.

U.S. data center power demand is projected to rise from 31 gigawatts in 2025 to 41 GW this year and 66 GW by 2027, according to Goldman Sachs. Year-over-year capacity additions are accelerating, but the turbine shortage could stall infrastructure buildouts.

The constraint has received less attention than high-profile AI data center announcements, despite its potential to disrupt long-term expansion plans.
