A volunteer group called the Bitcoin Red Team is proactively scanning Bitcoin’s open-source ecosystem to identify and fix security flaws. The effort aims to counter AI-driven threats, which have lowered the barrier for attackers with limited cybersecurity expertise to exploit vulnerabilities.

The group, formed as an emergency response, consists of 20 to 25 pseudonymous and public developers. Members include Bitcoin protocol maintainers and researchers, who collaborate directly with projects to mitigate risks. Chinese AI models are reportedly used more than U.S. models for security research due to fewer restrictions.

AI tools have accelerated the pace of both attacks and defenses, forcing developers into a race to secure networks. The group’s work highlights growing concerns over AI’s role in cybersecurity within the cryptocurrency sector.
