European regulators face challenges identifying responsible parties in decentralized finance lending vaults under upcoming MiCA rules.

The European Commission’s upcoming Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation may complicate oversight of decentralized finance (DeFi) lending vaults. Vault architectures like Vault V2 distribute roles across owners, curators, allocators, and sentinels, making it difficult to pinpoint a single regulated provider under current frameworks.

Legal analysis suggests DeFi lending vaults serve distinct functions, from liquidity direction to asset trading, and should not be uniformly classified. Broad regulation could inadvertently group disparate structures under a single label, risking unintended consequences for market participants.

Policymakers are urged to differentiate vault types to avoid stifling innovation while addressing regulatory concerns. The consultation highlights the tension between oversight and the fragmented nature of DeFi operations.
