Japan’s August 21 consumer price index release will dominate Asia’s economic calendar, with traders assessing inflation trends ahead of the Bank of Japan’s upcoming policy meeting. The data arrives as global central banks weigh rate adjustments amid mixed economic signals.

Consensus expectations for Japan’s CPI remain unpublished, but prior prints showed persistent inflationary pressures. Comparable periods suggest markets will scrutinize core inflation metrics, which have hovered near the BoJ’s 2% target.

Elsewhere, US Treasury auctioned $9 billion of 30-year TIPS at 2.973%, below the 2.991% when-issued rate. US initial jobless claims fell to 206K, beating forecasts of 210K, while the Philly Fed index surged to 47.4 against 25.0 expected.
