Coal will remain the world’s largest source of electricity through 2026, generating 10,974 terawatt-hours (TWh) annually, according to projections. This represents nearly one-third of the 33,313 TWh of global power production expected in that year.

Natural gas follows at 6,976 TWh, while hydropower, solar, wind, and nuclear lag further behind. Despite record growth in renewables, coal’s share remains unchallenged due to steady demand in emerging markets and industrial activity.

The forecast underscores coal’s resilience amid the energy transition, even as clean energy installations accelerate.
