Crypto exchange Binance provided Russian authorities with user data linked to a $700 terrorism financing case involving Ukrainian donations.
Binance supplied Russian investigators with transaction records and personal documents of a client accused of financing terrorism. The data included $700 in cryptocurrency transfers to Ukrainian military groups between January 2023 and March 2024, according to law enforcement documents.
The information, which included passport details and residency permits, was used as evidence against IT specialist Yuri Belenkiy. Russian authorities alleged the funds supported the Azov Brigade, a banned organization. Binance exited Russia in September 2023 but did not comment on the specific case.
The disclosure raises concerns about compliance with international sanctions and data privacy amid geopolitical tensions. No immediate market reaction was reported.
