U.S. lawn and garden spending reached an all-time high in 2025, but a major wholesale supplier prepares for bankruptcy amid industry shifts.
BFG Supply, a 53-year-old wholesale distributor in the lawn and garden sector, plans to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and may liquidate. The move comes despite record industry spending of $79.0 billion in 2025, a 13.5% year-over-year increase, according to data from Garden Research.
The report showed per-household spending rose 18.3% to $740, while the number of gardening households declined by 4.5 million. Lawn care spending surged 26%, hitting an all-time high, but the industry’s contraction in participants signals underlying challenges.
BFG Supply operates 15 warehouses and serves customers across the U.S. and Canada, offering over 100,000 products from 1,000 manufacturers. The company’s financial struggles contrast with broader industry growth.
