Sumitomo Corporation has acquired a 33.3% equity stake in the Gwynt Glas floating offshore wind farm, located 40km off the UK coast. The project, developed by EDF and ESB, targets a 1.5GW generation capacity and supports the UK’s Net Zero 2050 target by leveraging deeper-water wind resources.

The investment marks Sumitomo’s first foray into floating offshore wind, expanding its European renewable energy portfolio. The company has participated in offshore wind initiatives since 2014 but previously focused on fixed-bottom turbines. The deal follows a 2025 MoU with the UK’s Office for Investment to boost inward investment.

Sumitomo’s Medium-Term Management Plan 2026, released in May, prioritizes overseas energy solutions as part of its portfolio transformation. The Gwynt Glas project aligns with this strategy, reflecting growing corporate investment in UK renewable infrastructure.
