Analysts warn Japan’s yen defense loses effectiveness without policy shifts as USD/JPY approaches key 160 level.

The Japanese yen has surrendered most gains from recent Ministry of Finance intervention, with USD/JPY grinding higher toward the 160 mark. Analysts argue sustained yen weakness risks undermining intervention credibility unless authorities adjust broader policy settings.

Prior intervention in late April briefly pushed USD/JPY below 155, but the pair has since retraced nearly all losses. A breach of 160 could intensify pressure on Tokyo to demonstrate commitment to a stronger yen, regardless of U.S. economic data.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent previously described joint intervention as a “signal,” emphasizing the need for follow-through. Failure to act may erode confidence in intervention as a viable policy tool.
