Alerian MLP ETF (AMLP) delivers a 7.2% trailing-12-month dividend yield, nearly double the 3.8% yield of First Trust North American Energy Infrastructure Fund (EMLP). The trade-off comes in volatility, with AMLP’s beta at 1.25 versus EMLP’s 0.75 relative to the S&P 500.

AMLP’s 1.01% expense ratio slightly exceeds EMLP’s 0.95%, reflecting its concentrated exposure to master limited partnerships. EMLP’s broader utility and corporate holdings reduce commodity price sensitivity but dilute income potential.

Over the past year, AMLP returned 12.4% in total gains, while EMLP posted 8.7%, underscoring the yield-performance divergence between the two funds.
